Dressing: On Purpose

Growing up in the Kingdom Hall, I was taught that a suit denoted dignity and was the appropriate attire to appear before God. In those years, I used to wear suits constantly. And I loved wearing suits - not just because I liked the way they fit, but because i liked the story the suit told about who I was.

I haven’t owned a suit in years. I still appreciate a well-fitted, stylish suit on someone else. But when I even think about dressing up in one, something feels off.

I’m no longer comfortable with the story a suit tells about me.

chat: Your real story is not:

“I am updating my wardrobe”

Your real story is:

“I’m trying to determine what it means to intentionally present myself when I no longer believe the old systems that told me how to do that.”

Wardrobe is just the surface.

Clothing, as dressing, is a composition—typically a mix of base pieces, contrast (color, texture, or silhouette), and personal details—used to enhance how a person is experienced, though it can also function as armor, signal, or expression.
